[Tips] In Hindsight: How I Should Have Prepared

A few things I will be keeping in mind for my next journey.
Charles de Gaulle airport.
>> If you are traveling before or after the program, it's best to PACK LIGHT

This need to be emphasized. The more extensive and rapid-pace your travels are, the lighter you must pack. Bring necessities only.

Some recommend bringing two small suitcases, I figured one was easier to keep track of and just brought a medium-large one. During my independent travel, the size and weight made it a bit difficult to wrangle with all the trains, buses, and planes. There are advantages and disadvantages to both options.

>> If you decide to travel during free weekends, BOOK AHEAD.

Tickets to cities outside of France won’t be cheap if you try to book the week you want to leave. This deterred a couple people in my program from traveling over the weekend like they originally planned.

Freiburg, Germany

>> RESERVE TICKETS ONLINE AHEAD OF TIME to places like the top of the Notre Dame and Palace of Versailles.

You may also choose to do so after the program begins so you can go with classmates. But again, reserve as early as possible. If you are traveling outside of the program, it is encouraged that you google which museums are most popular at your destination and reserve ahead of time.

>> USE ATMs and withdraw as much money at once as possible to avoid ATM charges.

It is generally cheaper than using currency exchange stands at the airport and abroad. However, note that not all local banks ATMS will be compatible with your U.S. bank.

>> Decide whether an international plan with your current carrier or a NEW SIM CARD is best for you.

I traveled without an international plan or a sim for the duration of the program, relying only on wifi. It’s doable! I actually preferred it since it allowed me to immerse myself in my surroundings. The downside was being unable to google menu translations and information on walking tours/day trips.

I bought the Orange Holiday Sim for my independent travels. It can be used in most European counties, is only active for 14 days, includes 10GB of data, 120 minutes of calling. Classmates used SFR and Bouygues Telecom (in-France use only).

>> Keeps your eyes open and minds alert for PICKPOCKETS

This is no joke, especially at train stations and on crowded buses. Tuck your wallets in the bottom of your bag. A few of my classmates were pick-pocketed in Spain, shopping in Paris, and at a train station in Pisa.

>> STUDY AHEAD before the program and whenever possible.

That way, there's greater freedom to explore the destination without class or exams looming overhead.

Vernazza of Cinque Terre, Italy.

>> Download RICK STEVES Audio Europe app on iPhone or Android!!

You know those museum audio tour guides? Rick Steves has audio tours on the history, culture, and major museums of just about every must-travel European city! Save money on audio tours at museums and learn about Paris or any city you're traveling to in depth. His website also includes fantastic tips on traveling broad on planning, transportation, saving money... you name it and it's there!

>> Consider bringing BUG SPRAY if you are traveling somewhere with mosquitos like Italy!

I definitely learned the hard way! It's always best to research in advance.

Happy travels!

Sherry
